When you’re looking at Ethernet cables, you’ll come across Category 5 and Category 6 cables. CAT5 has been primarily used over the years, but has been largely replaced by the new CAT5E – the ‘E’ stands for “enhanced”.

CAT5 Ethernet cables are able to handle a speed up to 100 Mbps at 100 MHz bandwidth. CAT6 is similar to CAT5, but has a greater bandwidth capacity at 250 Mhz and faster speed at 10 Gbps.

When deciding which type to install at your home or office, you’ll want to look at your current internet speed or requirements for your work. If internet speed or cross-talk is a concern, CAT6 will be a better option. CAT6 cables also tend to be thicker than CAT5, so this also needs to be considered.

Your Ethernet speed largely depends on the type of Ethernet connection you have – CAT5 or CAT6. Regardless, your internet speed with an Ethernet cable is faster than just connecting to your Wi-Fi.

This speed discrepancy is due to the capability of your Wi-Fi router’s hardware, as well as your Wi-Fi devices. Ethernet cables are simply able to support more. If your devices exceed the maximum data rate your internet service provider has, then you have reason to consider Ethernet for these devices.

Phone and Ethernet cables look quite similar, and it can be easy to mix them up. They are not interchangeable, however, and there are a few ways you can spot the difference:

Telephone cables have RJ11/RJ12 connectors which have 4-6 pins
Ethernet cables have RJ45 connecter which have 8 pins
RJ11/RJ12 connectors in phone cables mean they are smaller in size than Ethernet cables

If you try and put your Ethernet cable into a telephone port, you’ll quickly find out that you’ve got the wrong cable since it won’t fit! Likewise for an Ethernet port, if you try to plug a phone cable in it will be too small.
