Exhaust fans are perfect for removing smoke in the kitchen, steam in the bathroom, plus the hot and humid air both environments can create. Removing this air allows fresh new air to enter the room instead. The warm air that is removed is sucked through a ducting system and sent outside where it can dissipate.

Ceiling exhaust fans are especially important as they remove excess moisture which would otherwise lead to mould and bacteria growth.

Fans that move two cubic metres of air per second are sufficient for ventilation purposes. But if you need a heavy duty fan you may need to purchase something bigger.

It’s best practice to clean your exhaust fan at least once every six months. Regular cleaning ensures it remains in good working order and can most effectively ventilate the room.

Before you clean your fan, turn it off at the circuit breaker. Firstly, remove the vent cover, clean it with soapy water and leave it to air dry. Next, vacuum off the dust on the exhaust fan – keep a light touch so you don’t break anything.

Your fan will probably still be dirty after vacuuming. Use a damp cloth to clean off any remaining grime. You could even take apart the fan to get into all the components. Finally, with everything clean, reassemble the fan and turn it back on.

A ceiling fan can use anywhere between 4.5W to 45W of electricity, depending on fan speed and other factors. With this in mind, the cost to run a fan is approximately $0.13 to $1.29 per hour. Again dependent on numerous circumstances such as who your electricity provider is.

Ceiling fans with three blades are typically more affordable at the point of purchase. They generally create less drag on the fan’s motor, enabling it to move faster with less energy required. Three-blade ceiling fans can, however, be comparatively louder than fans with four or five blades.

If you’re looking for a ceiling fan with four blades, you’ll enjoy the benefits of quieter performance and improved aesthetic appeal, but the additional blade can mean the air will be moved around the room slower than what a three-blade fan will do.

A five-blade fan will be even quieter than a three or four-blade model, but will also generate greater drag on the motor, meaning the fan needs to work harder to achieve greater air movement. Four and five-blade fans are typically more expensive to purchase as well.
